OLD BOY

On November 19th 2011, I read online that filmmaker Spike Lee was now on the short list of directors considered for a re-imagining of the Korean film 'Oldboy' directed by Chan Wook Park, which was in turn adapted from the original Japanese manga 'Old Boy' by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi. I have not read the manga, but the movie is on the list of the best movies I have ever seen. Unlike many movie fans, I have no problem with remakes, as they more than often revive interest in the original, and occasionally are very good, like the remake of Dawn Of The Dead. That being the case, and having worked with the amazing Spike on a couple of occasions, I immediately e-mailed him expressing my desire to work on the film in any capacity. The following day, Spike simply replied, "If it happens you are doing Storyboards". In August 2012, Spike sent me the script, and I started on the boards. Screenwriter Mark Protosevich wrote the screenplays for The Cell, I Am Legend and Thor, three films I found very entertaining, and when I found out that 'Shame' cinematographer Sean Bobbit was to shoot it, I felt sure that it would be a great film. Anyone familiar with the original movie is aware of the cringeworthy twists in the story. Somehow, Lee and Protosevich managed to twist it further and cap it off with an ending that caught me completely off guard when I read the script. A few hours ago, on the 27th of November 2013, I caught the mid-day show at the Regal Cinema on Court St in Brooklyn NY. The entire cineplex was empty due to the time of day and the terrible weather, so I was able to get the perfect seat, and watch the movie undisturbed. As a crew member, I am somewhat biased, so I won't go on about it except to say that I am proud to be associated with this film.
